Marking Up a Design

Markups allow you to individually identify and track design changes and change requests for both 2D and 3D models. Since markups are stored in overlay files, you have a choice to define a process that best suits the needs of your organization. You can use a single overlay file on a project master file and this single file can contain all markups created by the entire project team. You can also create several overlay files for each group or discipline to control. An aggregation of markups from different overlay files can be done by setting the filter option in the Markups dialog icon bar, allowing you to view and edit markups regardless of the file in which they are stored.

The Markup Mode allows you to create and manage markup sheets so that you can capture views from the review model. You can also add markup elements, such as annotation text, freehand redlining, pen and area highlighting.

You can apply a template to your markups so that all markups are consistent throughout an organization. The template can include the logo, a border, and specific fields for markup properties.

You can use named expressions to automate the naming of markups. Once set up, you can select an expression from a list and the system auto-generates the correct base name for the markup as it is created.

Markups are managed through the Markups dialog, which opens when you click the Markups Dialog tool in the Primary Tools toolbox or when you select Review > Markup > Markups Dialog. By default, the Markups dialog is docked to the bottom of the application window. The top section of the Markups dialog displays information about the markup. The bottom section provides an audit trail of any changes made to the markup properties.

After you add markups and comments to the model, you can switch to the Review Mode to view the markups. You can save a markup to a PDF file to facilitate information exchange.

The markups store the state of clipping as well as the state of display sheet annotations setting in a model. So after creating a markup, even if you change these states, you can view their original state in the Review Mode.

With 2D files only, you can turn on or off the display of the markup geometry. The display is only preserved for the current session.
